Instead, it’s delivered through AWS or a content delivery network (CDN). Netflix (the producer) is never in the delivery loop. The Traditional Model (Without ZDR)

Your message → AI provider’s API → Model processes → Response

In this setup, your request goes directly to the model creator’s servers (Anthropic, OpenAI, etc.). These companies host the model on their own infrastructure, with their own retention policies. They can technically log and store your requests, even if they claim not to use them for training. Contractual guarantees of non-retention aren’t always enforceable.

Here, the process changes radically. Anthropic (for example) provides the model weights, the files that define its capabilities to AWS, Google, etc., via licensing agreements. AWS and Google then deploy these weights on their own infrastructure. The model runs on AWS or Google Cloud GPUs, not on Anthropic’s servers.

What this means in practice:

Anthropic is compensated via a licensing agreement, not through the API. They have no access to your data and no visibility into your requests.

Why Anthropic’s Direct API Isn’t ZDR

Anthropic hasn’t certified its direct API to the same non-retention standards required for a strict ZDR label. This doesn’t necessarily mean they store your data, but they don’t provide the formal contractual guarantee that Bedrock or Vertex AI offer. In a GDPR compliance context, this contractual guarantee is what matters.
